A HEALTHY DIET AND THE SCIENCE OF AGING SKIN
What causes our skin to age? Photodamage, smoking, pollution, toxins, lack of nutrition, poor lifestyle, overall poor health and well-being, menopause/andropause.
Oxidative stress is a MAJOR cause of aging. This occurs when our DNA, proteins and lipids are damaged by “free radicals” that result from inflammation and the consumption of toxins such as alcohol and cigarettes. The link between oxidative stress and sugar cannot be overstated!
Another cause for aging is GLYCATION. A high carbohydrate diet increases the rate of glycation. High fructose corn syrup and sugar are major factors in glycation. High levels of glycation are associated with cognitive decline, kidney disease, diabetes, vascular disease and overall aging.
Antioxidants scavenge free radicals and diminish the oxidative damage which keeps our bodies and skin healthy and young!
In addition to committing to a solid skin care regime, there is a way to eat which prolongs life and prevents skin aging. It requires abundant micronutrients (vitamins and minerals) to decrease oxidative stress; and proper macronutrients to minimize glycation of proteins and improve absorption of nutrients.
Eat diets high in good fats and phytonutrients found in plant products. Fat is necessary to properly absorb and transport nutrients, especially vitamins A,D, E and K.
Your skin needs adequate fat intake to be healthy!
What are the right fats? Monounsaturated fats and omega-3 fats are anti-
inflammatory! Omega-6 fats are INFLAMMATORY! Trans fats are TOXIC! Only omega-3 fatty acids and the fats in extra virgin olive oil have been shown to improve health!
Olive oil has been shown to increase insulin sensitivity. Less glycation!!
Fresh olive oil (unlike canola oil and seed oils ) also contains a number of cancer
risk reducing and anti-aging phytonutrients.
